File Size Converter

Understand storage sizes at a glance. Enter any amount — 1.5 GB, 750 MB, 2 TB — and see it converted to every other unit at once, from bits up to petabytes, in both decimal (KB/MB/GB) and binary (KiB/MiB/GiB) systems. Useful for comparing hard drives, checking download sizes and settling the “why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?” debate.

The conversion is simple arithmetic done in your browser. Nothing is transmitted.

How to use File Size Converter

  1. Enter the amount and pick its unit.
  2. The full conversion table updates automatically.
  3. Copy the results if you need them elsewhere.

About this tool

Digital storage is measured in two parallel systems: decimal units (kilobyte = 1,000 bytes) used by drive makers, and binary units (kibibyte = 1,024 bytes) used by operating systems. That difference is why a “500 GB” hard drive shows up as about 465 GB in Windows.

This converter shows both systems side by side for every value, so you can translate between them without doing the math yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hard drive show fewer GB than advertised?
Manufacturers label drives in decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), while Windows reports in binary units where 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. A 1 TB drive therefore reads about 931 GB — nothing is missing.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KB (kilobyte) is exactly 1,000 bytes. KiB (kibibyte) is 1,024 bytes. The same applies up the scale: MB vs MiB, GB vs GiB, TB vs TiB.
Is 1 MB equal to 1000 or 1024 KB?
Officially, 1 MB = 1,000 KB (decimal). Many operating systems historically called 1,024 KB a “megabyte”, which is now properly written as 1 MiB. This tool shows both values so there is no ambiguity.
How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?
1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal units, and 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB in binary units.
Can it convert internet speeds too?
Partially — it includes bits, which speeds are measured in (like 100 Mbit/s). Remember that 1 byte = 8 bits, so a 100 Mbit/s connection downloads at about 12.5 MB per second.
