Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percentage change?
Choose “Percentage change” and enter the old and new values. The result is (new − old) ÷ old × 100.
What does “percent” actually mean?
“Per hundred” — 25% is 25 out of every 100, which is the decimal 0.25. Every percentage calculation is a variation of that idea.
What is the difference between a percentage increase and percentage points?
Moving from 10% to 15% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a 50% relative increase. The change mode computes the relative one.
How do I find the original value before a percentage was added?
Divide the final value by (1 + percent ÷ 100). For example, 110 after a 10% increase came from 110 ÷ 1.10 = 100.
Is 0.5 the same as 50%?
Yes — multiply a fraction or decimal by 100 to express it as a percentage.
Any quick mental tricks?
10% is the decimal point moved one place left; 5% is half of that; 20% is double. Together they cover tips, VAT and most sale maths.
