About this tool
Many places limit how much you can write: social posts, meta descriptions, ad headlines, SMS messages. The character counter shows exactly where you stand, including the byte size which matters for text messages and some databases.
When to use it: social posts, meta descriptions, usernames and any field with a hard character limit.
Frequently asked questions
What does “UTF-8 bytes” mean?
It is the size of the text when stored as UTF-8, the standard text encoding. ASCII characters use 1 byte, while accented letters, emoji and many other scripts use 2–4 bytes.
Do line breaks count as characters?
Yes — line breaks are characters too. The “without spaces” figure still includes line breaks.
What are common character limits?
X/Twitter allows 280 characters per post, meta descriptions should stay near 160, and page titles near 60 — the counter helps you stay inside each limit.
Do emojis count as one character?
In the character count, yes. In UTF-8 bytes, though, many emoji use four bytes — which matters only when a system enforces a byte limit rather than a character limit.
What is the difference between characters and bytes?
Characters are what you see; bytes are what storage and transmission use. Plain English letters use one byte each, while accented letters, Urdu, Chinese and emoji use more.
Is there a limit to how much I can paste?
The counter handles long documents comfortably — everything is counted locally in your browser, so size is rarely an issue.
